Angus & Julia Stone - Down The Way [2010] [Album] & Discography

Angus & Julia Stone are a brother-sister duo from Newport on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia.

Their first EP, Chocolates and Cigarettes, was released in 2006 in Australia with the record label EMI and in the UK with independent label Independiente.

Angus and Julia began to collaborate on their musical endeavors in early 2006. Prior to that, both had performed as solo artists, principally at open mike nights, but with each using the other as a backing partner. In terms of composing material, they write on their own, then work together on structure and harmonies.

ARTiST: Angus And Julia Stone
ALBUM: Down The Way
LABEL: Flock
GENRE: Indie
PLAYTiME: 1h 06min 04sec total

Both Angus and Julia have distinctive vocal styles. The Sydney Morning Herald’s Bernard Zuel described their vocals as such: "Her voice has a fractured feel like Jolie Holland; his has a smoke-on-the-beach drawl." UK journalist Johnny Sharp stated, "Most impressive, though, are the songs - simple but blindingly effective acoustic compositions, warm boy-girl harmonies and delicate, less-is-more arrangements. Resistance is surely futile."

Mitch Connelly, the band's drummer and percussionist, also acts as the band’s official photographer. His brother, who works under the name IOSHVA, maintains their website and produces their artwork. The band also directs their own videos along with their friends at Nippard Productions.

In 2006, Angus and Julia played several festivals across Australia, including The Great Escape and Splendour in the Grass. They later toured the UK to promote the release of their EP.

Whilst in the UK in the latter part of the year, they were invited into Chris Potter’s studio (The Verve/Richard Ashcroft) to record. In the meantime, Fran Healy from UK band Travis heard their debut EP and also invited them to his house to record. The resulting EP, Heart Full of Wine, was released in February 2007. Julia also provided backing vocals for the track "Battleships" on Travis's 2007 album, The Boy with No Name.

On January 26, 2007, Angus and Julia Stone performed at Sydney's Big Day Out to a large crowd. They have since released their full-length debut album, A Book Like This, in Australia.

Angus & Julia Stone release their sophomore LP Down The Way, a beautifully crafted indie folk album that sees the brother-sister duo enter new territory and expand on their already captivating sound. Uplifting harmonies mix with sombre melodies and innocent story telling to create this unique release.

Greg Haines - Until the Point of Hushed Support [2010] [Album]

Until the Point of Hushed Support is the second full-length offering from Greg Haines, born in England and now based in Berlin. Though it has been over three years since the release of his debut, Slumber Tides (Miasmah, 2006), the last few years have seen Haines traveling around the world and refining his craft, performing as a solo artist, improvising with other musicians, creating music for contemporary dance, and finally arriving at this new album, a beautifully contemplative forty-eight minute piece for string quintet, church organ, piano, percussion, and electronics.

Tracklist:

I. Industry vs. Inferiority
II. Marc's Descent
III. In the Event of a Sudden Loss
IV. Until the Point of Least Resistance

For the most part, this album was recorded in the Grunewald Church in Berlin with the assistance of friend and fellow musician, Nils Frahm. Together, Haines and Frahm assembled a team of musicians to bring the score alive. More processed sounds (mostly assembled at Haines' Berlin studio, The Electricity Works) were even played back into the church and re-recorded, to truly add to the acoustic nature of the album.

Whereas Slumber Tides played out as a gorgeous exploration of sound and composition by a curious musician with fresh ears, Until the Point of Hushed Support comes across as a bold statement from a unique modern composer. Throughout the four sections of the piece, we are taken seamlessly through an incredibly powerful dynamic range. With an assortment of sounds collected and processed over the last two years combined with the live instrumentation, Haines creates his own orchestra; a unique sonic world where the sound of a dying radio is just as important as a mournful violin.

Release Notes:

99 Songs of Revolution was originally thought to be only a Bandits of the
Acoustic Revolution release, as stated in the liner notes for their debut 2001
EP, A Call to Arms. Not much was known about the project until September 2008,
when the project was officially and publicly announced. It was revealed that 99
Songs of Revolution would feature 99 cover songs spread out over eight
full-length albums from four different artists. Each of the four bands, Bandits
of the Acoustic Revolution, Streetlight Manifesto and two currently unknown
"Streetlight Manifesto related" artists, will release two albums in the series.

The project saw many tentative release dates in 2008 and 2009. Toward the end of
2009, Streetlight Manifesto announced that the first CD had been completed as
was awaiting release from the record label. The band also hinted at the
possibility of self-releasing the album on vinyl through the Pentimento Music

Streetlight Manifesto began previewing their songs from 99 Songs of Revolution

Their layers of riffs can seem daunting at first, but their sound begs repeated listening and the intricacies behind the wall of awesome reveal themselves over time. Stereogum called their jam “The Absolute Place” a “triumphant, heavily riffed, primarily instrumental epic, whiplashing through six minutes of smiling prog jams, and as many tempos as passages, before settling into one last minute of uplifting chants.”

Zola Jesus - Stridulum [2010] [EP]

Zola Jesus has been keeping herself busy for the last couple of years. After the release of two LPs, an EP and a couple of singles, touring with the help of her cousin Dead Luke and forming part of Former Ghosts (where Xiu Xiu's Jamie Steward also collaborates) she's coming back with a new 6 tracks EP to be out the 6th of March on Sacred Bones. The EP is not available for pre-order yet and there's no information on the name of the tracks but she's sent one of the tracks to be included called Night to a couple of blogs and I have to say it's my favourite ZJ track yet. Although is her most accessible track so far as the fuzz, noises and lo-fi sound have mainly disappeared, the main characteristics and influences are still there. The track is a dense and mysterious song where she strengthens her voice and stops hiding it behind all the electronic noises she normally uses and has never sound as good. The people who have heard the whole EP says it's the closest she's been to sound Hi-Fi but the EP is still a dense exercise full of pounding drums, strings and choral sounds. And it has one of the best covers I've seen lately. Can't wait to hear it.

Cults - 7" [2010]

There is little to nothing known about Cults… The band that is. Obviously if you try to google search their name you will get back 4,530,000 search results about everything but a guy/girl duo making 60’s inspired pop music. There is no Myspace page and no background info to be found. We only know that they are a guy/girl duo because Pitchfork is great at doing their homework- I have no idea how they found themselves on Pitchfork, but it's a good thing they did!\Go Outside, their first track to surface on the internet, brilliantly starts out with a sample by Jonestown leader Jim Jones: “To me, death is not a fearful thing. It’s living that’s treacherous.” The quote is kind of heavy, the song is everything but. A lo-fi sing-along that is built on a simple but catchy bassline, glockenspiel and hand claps. The vocals are drenched in reverb and express the feeling of wanting to go outside to play, while still being holed up in bed… I can feel the sunshine now.

Cults - 7"

Tracklist:
1. Go Outside 03:21
2. Most Wanted 02:58
3. The Curse 02:24

Taken from Pitchfork:
"There's more information on the wrapper of a candy bar than there is on the Internet about Cults. The band's got an un-Googleable name and no MySpace page in sight. They do, however, have a sparse Bandcamp page, where their first 7" is listed for release on December 23, 2012. We have discovered that they are a boy/girl duo, that they live in New York, and that they are both film students. And we know that they have a killer song on that 7" called "Go Outside".

The song's opening suggests that Cults have a slightly sinister sense of humor. Where the title suggests fresh air and a proactive trip into the sunshine, we first hear a quote from the ultimate cult leader, Jonestown figurehead Jim Jones: "To me, death is not a fearful thing. It's living that's treacherous." What follows, though, is pure butter: "Go Outside" has the innocent and balmy feel that brings to mind Swedish indie pop, with a tinkling glockenspiel cutting through humidity, an appealingly lazy bassline, and joyous sing-along vocals. But for all its simplicity, there's some deep feeling coarsing through "Go Outside", and Cults transcend the song's Free Design-inspired 1960s pop origins. "You really want to hole up/ You really want to stay inside and sleep the light away," the song chides, surrounding the voices in enveloping reverb, before following with, "I know what's good/ Exactly 'cause I have been there before." And then it takes you there."

Sophie Madeleine - LOVE.LIFE.UKULELE [2009] [Album]

There comes a time in a true originals career where they become more than the sum of their influences. Sophie Madeleine's star is in such an ascendant, and we are witnessing the results of some maverick fusion.

[ Indie / Ukulele / Soft ]

Steeped in an inherited classicism (she had a music-lover for a father,) she absorbed the greats of the last century - from Cole Porter to Gershwin, Bacharach, Beatles and beyond.

Shades of Feist and Aimee Mann haunt her delivery, whilst she shines a light on the love song in a way that is at once candid, secretive and strange.

Her voice has an authority beyond her experience, and her sound wraps up a hundred years of music and sends it into orbit for a new century to witness. Remember this name Sophie Madeleine is going to be around for a long time.

Sophie is one of the first people in the world who can claim to be a "Master of Song" after graduating from the MA Songwriting Course at Bath Spa University.

To paraphrase: relaxing vocals blended with smooth ukulele sounds.

Ghost Inside - Between The Lines (w/Brendan of Betrayal) [2010] [TRACK]

Genre: Metalcore / Hardcore
Country: USA

The Ghost Inside is an American Melodic hardcore band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2006 under the name of "A Dying Dream." As A Dying Dream, they released a EP consisting of the song "The Brave". Not long after, they changed their name to "The Ghost Inside", and released a full-length studio album entitled Fury And The Fallen Ones. They have toured with bands such as I Killed the Prom Queen, August Burns Red, Bring Me The Horizon, Misery Signals, Bleeding Through and Parkway Drive.

The long awaited sophomore release titled "Returners" is due out June 8th of 2010. In an interview with Coastal City Clothing, Johnathan explains the meaning behind the album title -

"Well, I came up with “Returners” because being on the road so much, you constantly go back to places that you’ve come to know quite well, (that you “return” to) and you notice that some things are completely different than the last time you were there. A big part of this for me was when I would return home. Relationships change, friends move, relatives die, and your favorite places cease to exist. It just reemphasizes the fact that no matter how naive I want to be about it, we live in an ever changing world and as much as I wish things could stay ideal forever, its human evolution. So I sit back and wait to return to the places I’ve come to know and face the differences I’m left with."

Illuminate the Sky - 4 Song Sample [2010]

Illuminate The Sky comes from an epic vision. Our band represents believing in dreams, moving forward and having a strong love for life.

For many of the band members, this is our "last shot". So when we decided to put this band together over a year ago, all we knew was that we wanted to make sure we were happy, in both the music and the friendship. We figured without happiness in the band and the music, we would never stick together like a true family.

We were patient in waiting for the right people to be a part of Illuminate The Sky, just as we were patient in our song writing, and with the stages of creating the band. We feel our first songs and recordings are going to set the tone for the band, and give people a good idea of where we are coming from, and where we intend to go.

After preparing our debut full length album, we stepped into the studio with our good friend Rob Weaver to record a two song demo that we will be handing out free everywhere we go and play.

We have found our family, we have created our own happiness, and now we are ready to launch 'Illuminate The Sky' and take it to cities across the country.

Singles: Centuries Apart (aka Memphis West) [2010]

Some legit ass instrumentation! Quite an interesting sound; kind of Winds of Plague esk, but on a whole new level.

"The Memphis West has certainly undergone a tremendous amount of change already in 2010, and with that being said you may notice we are now a 5 piece and are without Nick and Dragan. There's no bad attitudes between us and we are pleased to have Mitch playing guitar and Kyle Anderson (Beyond the Shadows) now doing vocals. We aren't a completely different band, we've just outgrown what The Memphis West encompassed, I can assure you CENTURIES APART will be a more mature and encouraging band. We just wrapped up recording the 5 track EP (title still pending) at Sundown Studios, and will be releasing a bunch of cool updates soon."

Genre: Metal /Hardcore / Christian
Hometown: Newmarket, Ontario, Canada

Singles: A Sentece to Silence [2010]

Singles: A Sentece to Silence [2010]

Genres: Progressive / Psychedelic / Hardcore
Hometown: Toronto, Ontario, Canada!

"A Sentece to Silence has gone through some changes and is now a 4-piece band made up of a vocalist (Chris) guitarist (Brendon) bassist (Justin) and drummer (Alex aka Defran). We've written a lot of new, pretty cool material, so come check it and let us blow your ear drums out!"

"Our new style consists of a unique blend of technical, progressive, melodic and euphoric sounds, brought together in a way that creates a completely new sound to metal, and song structure that creates a more visually artistic view to music and represents an over all theme through out the entire album."

Also, they need a new bassist, so get in contact if you're rockin' a bass!

I figured it'd be a good idea to post this as they have a lot of new material coming and might ditch their old stuff. :|

Singles: Rae Cassidy Klagstad - Singles [2010]

Holy Shit!!

I was just rocking some Copeland and found myself wondering who the guest female vocalist was on their new album "You are my Sunshine"- more specifically, the track: "On the Safest Ledge." As it turns out, her name is Rae Cassidy Klagstad; she is a young self produced artist coming out of Milwaukee, and boy can she hit some notes! I strongly encourage ya'll to have a listen to this young lady and shoot her a message on her MySpace and grab her CD off of Itunes (I can't find it anywhere, but I'm sure she knows where it is.)

Her music has a nice 30's 40's tone that I can extremely appreciate; quite distinguished among our contemporary list of artists.

"Greetings and salutations, I'm Rae Cassidy Klagstad, trying to spread the music my creator gave me to everyone. I'm determined to make a musical impact on the world and hopefully show God's love through it. Also, I'm hardly sane it turns out."

Personally I think her best track is , it reminds me a lot of the artist "Eisley", the raw vibrato of their voices is quite similar- simply incredible.
