Skream - Outside the Box [2010] [Album]

Outside the Box is Jones' second album to date, following his self-titled 2006 debut. He's kept himself extremely busy in the years since that release, putting out dozens of 12-inches on Tempa, Tectonic and Non Plus among others, and playing gigs around the world as one of dubstep's biggest names. A notoriously prolific producer, he's already released a total of 81 tunes since 2003, and reportedly has around 20,000 more sitting on a hard drive in his studio, which is still located in his old bedroom at his parents' house in Croydon, England.

The record will feature a host of guest appearances, including vocals by rapper Murs and synthpop outfit La Roux, whose track "In For The Kill" made great remix fodder for Skream last year. Drum & bass artists D-Bridge and Instra:mental contribute as well, by co-producing the track "Reflections."

Skream - Outside the Box [2010] [Album]

Skream makes a lot of tunes. His weekly radio show with partner-in-crime Benga on pirate station Rinse FM isn’t just the place to hear the latest dubstep; it’s a clearinghouse and testing ground for the duo’s latest creations. Blink and you’ll miss them: most of the tracks they play only see the light of day months later, if ever. Cannily, Skream’s recent Freeizm series has helped clear up his bottleneck of tracks awaiting official release, but it’s also served as a peace offering of sorts for people who’d otherwise dismiss his sophomore album “Outside the Box” as a sell-out move. It’s hard for DJs to complain about the man’s move towards pop when he just gave away nearly 20 hardcore tracks for free and a quick scan of Dubstepforum’s front-page reveals a surplus of good will towards the man, a rarity in a community that prizes underground credibility above all else.

With that in mind, it’s best to take “Outside the Box” as what it is: a post-Dubstep electronic pop album meant to expand Skream’s fanbase beyond the hardcore faithful. Skream doesn’t go outside the boxes so much as he checks them off: you’ve got your jungle tunes, your 2-step, your vocal pop, your synth-funk, your deep dubstep, your tear-out, etc. For the most part he succeeds, the only sour note being the anemic “8 Bit Baby” which suffers from a boring beat and worse verse from Murs.

Otherwise, “Outside the Box” is a great showcase for Skream’s adaptability behind the boards as he successfully twists different song-structure to his stylistic ticks. There’s just enough underground edge to pop tunes like “How Real” and “Finally” while the instrumental “Fields of Emotion” and “Reflections” are as dark and atmospheric as anything else out there these days. Compared to fellow Dubstep alumni Rusko who attempted a similarly diverse album earlier this year and strayed too far into electro territory, Skream’s pop turns here are admirably restrained, opening his sound up without reaching for David Guetta-level cheese. Even “The Epic Last Song” resists the urge to go into full on anthem territory, relying on junglist drums rather than cheap tricks to drive it forward.

It’s a delicate balancing act and one that’s representative of Dubstep as a whole in 2010: not quite fully mainstream but miles away from the near-empty underground clubs that birthed it and the cavernous sound that captivated early adopters. It remains to be seen if the album finds its audience: purists will quite possibly scoff, waxing lovingly about Mala’s “Return II Space” while pop fans may get turned off by metallic grind of “Wibbler” and the comparatively dark atmosphere. But that’s Dubstep’s secret in 2010: for every elitist and populist there seems to be five kids who like their music aggressive yet accessible, dark with touches of light, empty but percussive and underground but pop. “Outside the Box” is a victory for those kids and for a genre of music that’s gone far beyond the wildest expectations anyone had for it. Going on a decade since its humble roots, it’s getting harder and harder to keep this sound inside its box.

Skream - Freeizm Vol. 3 [2010] [EP]

Today is the day the Skream presents to us the final instalment in his Freeizm series, a collection of unreleased productions as a Give-away ! This is all in an effort to tease our taste buds in the run up to the release of his album Outside The Box, which is released on August 9th.

Tracklisting:

1. Skream – Behind The Curtain
2. Skream – Meta-Lick
3. Skream – Rollin
4. Skream – Metal Mouth
5. Skream – Pick Ya Knees Up
6. Geeneus – Now Is The Time (Skreamix)
7. Geiom – Reminissin (Skream’s Tribal 44 Mix)
8. Skream – Let’s Go Fucking Mental
9. Dr. Blue and The Time Travellers – Dr. Who Dub (Skreamix)

“Behind The Curtain”, “Meta-Lick” and “Metal Mouth” are original productions which have a definite lean towards the “filthier” side of dubstep with multiple, rawer basslines. “Let’s Go Fucking Mental” does exactly what it says on the tin and it takes that raw sound and morphs into a bouncier rhythm that will no doubt set any crowd off in the middle of a set. All of these contrast with “Rollin” which demonstrates a more ambient sound, where the subs take over with gentle beats. “Pick Ya Knees Up” comfortably sits in the middle of all these tracks as a dark track with a omnipresent electronic feel on top. The remixes in this package couldn’t be any further from the other tracks. The Skreamix of Geiom’s “Reminissin” is clearly stated as a tribal track, with dub undertones. We switch to a reggae style in the Skreamix of Dr. Blue and The Time Travellers’ “Dr Who Dub”, and finally we see grime given a dubstep lick in the Skreamix of Geeneus’ “Now Is The Time”.

Rufio - Anybody Out There [2010] [Album]

California punk band Rufio has not released a full album in over 5 years and in 2007 they even played a farewell show thinking their project was going to be over. However, they released The Loneliest EP and their comeback album Anybody Out There is set to release July 27th. I got sent the album from Universal Music Group so I got a chance to listen to it.

The album is what you would expect from a good pop punk band; high energy, simple catchy lyrics, easy to sing along with melodies. Since their last album, they have replaced their bassist and drummer. What used to be Mike Jimenez and Jon Berry is now Taylor Albaugh and Terry Stirling Jr.

Anybody Out there really does reflect that change. Their rhythms have slowed down a little from the face paced songs such as Countdown and Science Fiction you heard on their last album MCMLXXXV. However, its not neccessarily a negative factor about the album. I think they were aiming to create something that their target audience would love and be able to sing along with and in this, they were successful in doing so.

The first track Little World is probably the most rhythmically complicated and sets the stage. It gives you some of the old Rufio sound mixed in with what you are going to expect with the rest of the album. The next track Drunk in Love is probably one of my favourite tracks from the album, beginning with a memorable guitar lick that recurrs and catchy melody that can easily be sung along to. For power punk lovers, and teenage girls, this is the perfect album.

There are a few tracks from the Loneliest EP that have been rereleased on this album such as All that Lasts. Here is a video I found of them performing All that Lasts live:

Last Call Chernobyl - Drowning Beneath the Sound of Change [2010] [320kbps]

Just saw these guys at Warped Tour 2010 Toronto. I'm quite glad that I was in the right place at the right time!! Hailing from the center of musical activity in Nova Scotia, Halifax based Last Call Chernobyl is a group of young men who have come together from various backgrounds to pursue a shared passion of metal music.

Having been formed in late 2007 the band has garnered itself a small but dedicated following in around Nova Scotia and has shared the stage with such heavy musical acts as Means, Orchid’s Curse, We The Undersigned, LifeStory: Monologue, Shortline Hero and What’s He Building in There?, along with countless other large local acts around the province.

Last Call Chernobyl has released the track listing, album artwork and a free song for their upcoming album, "‘Drowning Beneath the Sound of Change," which is set to be released this summer. The tracklisting is as follows:

1. This City
2. For Fear of Falling
3. Beneath the Veil
4. Drowning Beneath the Sound of Change
5. Eris
6. Level 7
7. Burden of Dreams

The band has also released one of the songs, ‘Beneath the Veil,’ which can be heard here.

In addition to playing local shows the band has taken their hard work ethic and can do attitude to new heights. Testament to these is their self booking of tours in multiple provinces in Atlantic Canada and self production and recording of all music. With vigor, determination and a hard work ethic seen in few bands, Last Call Chernobyl is steadily growing and always striving to push the boundaries of its creative limits. The band is poised to continue its onslaught of heavy music and is set to release a brand new EP followed by a slew of shows to promote.

Though many bands are lost in the currents of the modern music business, Last Call Chernobyl is as tenacious as it is hard working. With patience, perseverance and always the perfection of its musical craft Last Call Chernobyl is set to try and make its mark in the modern day music scene.

Michou - Discography [2010]

A scientist from the future made a quantum leap back to the year 1974 and conducted an experiment in which one man would impregnate 4 separate women with 4 separate children. The 4 children were all born male, and therefore brothers from separate mothers. Following in their father's footsteps they became inner city cowboys and started a gang known to all as "the downtown rumblers". They were feared for their frequent attacks on the innocent, and their calling card: cooked macaroni noodles stuffed in shirt pockets. Citizens would walk around fearing the call "MICHOU!", which the gang would shout as they jumped from near by ice cream trucks.

The scientist, realizing the damage and randomness of his experimentation, took the inner city cowboys back into the future; the year 2009. The rumblers used their post teenage/futuristic angst to compose delicate indie music with pop sensibilities. Now their music is daring to take over the world, as the scientist sits back and collects 15% publishing rights, and an additional 5% on any gross over $200,000. The band, paying homage to their previous attack call, "michou" decided to name the group as such. Now we look to the future and watch their destinies unfold.

Michou - Cardona [2010] [Album]

Some very very very poppy folk. One of this bands songs is even played on Much Music, but some how theyve managed to stay small with under 600 listeners on last.fm. This is a band you can play when youre with that girl who likes top 40 music because youll both be able to appreciate it. She'll like it because it very catchy and youll like it because its actually good. So here you go download this up and coming Canadian band.

iamamiwhoami - Singles [2010] [V0]

THIS IS SICK ASS SHIT!!!! I am extremely glad to be able to bring this to ya'll.

iamamiwhoami is an electronic music project featuring a female vocalist and unknown producers. It was promoted through a viral campaign on YouTube. On 4 December 2009, a surreal clip less than a minute long appeared on YouTube submitted by iamamiwhoami. The clip was forwarded to several known blogger as well as music journalists. A second soon appeared and then a third. By then, Chris Cantalini and MTV writer James Montgomery picked up on the clips fueling speculation that had been building in blogs.

To date, iamamiwhoami has released twelve videos, and six music releases.

http://www.youtube.com/user/iamamiwhoami

The first six videos are short "teaser" clips and feature an elusive female character, as MTV writer James Montgomery said, "a dendrophiliac's wet dream, loaded with images of a mud-smeared woman licking a tree and some strangely sexualized sap"[3].

As the video's story develops, the character is shown in a womb-like structure and then later in a snow-covered forest, before finally entering on a wooden cabin and appearing on the roof surrounded by leaves.

The videos can be clearly divided into two groups. The first six, bearing numeric titles, and the second group, bearing single-lettered titles. This second group of videos are full songs and feature other characters. The images are no longer distorted and lyrics can be clearly heard.

Those clips continue to feature the same kind of folkloric elements presented on the first 6 teasers.

The music is a compelling mix of electronic, alternative rock and experimental music featuring eerie, heavily distorted and or muted female vocals at points in each video. They are believed to be part of a viral marketing campaign for a new music act.
