Alexander - Alexander [2011.CD.V0] HoTT

Alexander Ebert, lead singer of Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, will be releasing his debut solo album Alexander on March 1st via Community Music (Rough Trade will release the album in Europe on February 28th). The album will include ten brand new songs that Alexander wrote and composed entirely himself. The track-list for the album can be found below. During breaks from touring with the Zeroes over the past year, Alexander began building and recording the pieces that would become the songs for this album alone in his bedroom. Before this album, all of the music he worked on had been collaborative, especially with the 10-person Magnetic Zeroes. "I wanted to be able to build an album basically with my hands, like building a house by myself," Alexander remarked of his inspiration for making this album without outside help. There isn't a single sound on the ten-song album that Alexander didn't perform himself. Alone in his room, he had his guitar, a Lowery organ he picked up at a St. Vincent's thrift store in Los Angeles for seventy bucks, a clarinet he used for the bridge on the record's first single, "Truth," and a violin he'd found somewhere in Tucson on tour. He had his own voice, his breath, his knees to slap, his fingers to snap and his toes to tap. When he knew that he wanted to use a violin on the bridge of "Glimpses," he had an urge to call a friend to come play it for him, but then questioned why he wouldn't try it himself. Says Alexander, "To me, it's a very humble album with sky's-the-limit sort of qualities, and so I didn't really shy away from doing whatever I felt like doing." As for the music itself, Alexander explains that some of the inspirations for the "mouth sounds" that you can hear throughout the record were from all-time-favorites of his like the 1970 chart-topping ditty "In The Summertime" by British band Mungo Jerry. He also notes that children's clapping games like Patty Cake and infectious and optimistic Disney tunes like "Zip A Dee Do Da" served as loose inspirations for him. Alexander will play select shows before returning to the studio to complete work on the upcoming second LP from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, which will be released later this year.

Lots of bangin' beats and old-school video game samples. This really rocks, but the downside is that the songs are quite short... almost like the Anal Cunt of chiptune. The short track length works in the sense that it keeps the listener wanting more, and the rapid succession definitely keeps things interesting. If you're looking to hear some bizarre tunage, this will certainly do the trick! 7/10

Imogen Heap - Propeller Seeds [Digital Bundle] [2011.V0.MP3.WEB] HoTT

Here is the result of another fantastic crazy inspiring fun 2 weeks of writing, recording, mixing and producing another song toward my 4th album. Also piecing together with Heapteam and beyond, the video and artwork, with some of you.

Here it is:
Imogen Heap - Propeller Seeds [2011.V0.MP3.WEB] HoTT

Included:

Propeller Seeds - 8.91 MB
Propeller Seeds (Spaces and places commentary) - 22.12 MB
Lifeline (unplugged at 'Propeller seeds' release party) - 10.92 MB

I loved reading peoples clarity cloud moments as they floated into the microsite, or flicking through your photographs while I wrote about a moment in my life.Thank you if you were someone who contributed to that. It all goes through the cogs to contribute.

Really had a great time working with Nick Ryan on this one in and out of the studio. Every time I hear a song in a coffee shop or taxi these last few days, It musically merges with the sounds around me. A passing police car siren, tunes into the background music. Someone laughing, clicks into rhythm. The process had me approach the song writing from a very different angle. More about how the song came to be with the Heapsong3 release in October, as we'll put the making of Propeller Seeds on that.

I'd been waiting until I could give the song everything I had, to write about the moment i met a certain someone and glad I did. Now I and he can relive that moment in time and space as the song walks us through those special moments with each replay.

Am so charged for the next one. Please sign up to mailing list to find out what it's about, so you don't miss out on any action.

Couldn't have put together the artwork we have or the video without a few of you and I greatly appreciate you getting involved (and for putting on those suits!). Not forgetting the balloon poppers in Oxford.

Huge thanks to Nick for these immensely inspiring two weeks we've had together and I hope for more collaborations in the future.

Special thanks to Simon and Phil, Dean, Dan and Fanny on pulling such a beautiful video together on a shoestring.

Felix Thorn for giving us the sound samples of his machines in action so that the music could begin with the last sound Thomas and I heard before we met.
And of course Thomas, without whom this song and many more wonderful moments in my life would not exist. I am one lucky lady and I love you to pieces.

Those who were involved came to the release party at my house, where we ate some delicious food, drank, chatted and listened to 'propeller seeds' together. I also played a few songs to them including 'lifeline' on the piano, which is on the 3dicd package.

Enjoy! Xx

Get it!:
Avalanche City - Our New Life Above The Ground [Limited Edition] [2010.MP3.320.CD] HoTT

The story of Avalanche City begins in a house, alone, for hours and hours each day for months, slowly learning how to sing by process of scales, recording, and self critique.

Six months after taking the first steps towards singing, Dave Baxter played his first solo show as Avalanche City. Six months after the first show, one year after beginning the process of teaching himself how to sing, the first tracks were laid for Avalanche City's debut album Our New Life Above The Ground.

Armed with a sack full of vegetarian single serve curries Dave Baxter headed into the countryside and moved into a little community hall called the Kourawhero Hall, just north of Auckland. There he spent the week alone recording and playing everything himself with only the cows and the milk trucks as company.

Review:
http://www.indieshuffle.com/cults-cults/

Release Notes:

Before we jump into Cults, let's get one thing out of the way: this is some seriously twee stuff. Anybody who heard the Brooklyn band's self-released 7" on Bandcamp last year could tell you that Madeline Follin's voice is a precious, high-pitched little thing, and that the band's penchant for twinkling keyboards and reverb (not to mention their fashionably un-Google-able name) practically screamed "indie pop" in capital letters and red print. Cults can't help the fact that they fall squarely into a genre riddled with annoying signifiers and industry-constructed wannabes, but they can take those basic elements that make the best '60s-inflected indie pop tick and combine them into fantastic songs that have an uncanny ability to lodge their way firmly into your head. That's hardly easy to do, but Cults pull it off - and then some.

Because while Cults' songs are far from complex, they aren't simple. The little guitar slide in "Abducted" that kicks the album into high gear is a perfectly placed flourish executed tightly and efficiently, a far cry from the self-consciously lazy stylings found in bands occupying similar mid-century revivalist territory. Clever touches abound, providing these songs with an appealingly quick pulse and just enough bounce to be completely charming. The phrase "summer music" has been invoked so many times with regards to this album that I'm loathe to use it again, but this stuff just sounds sunny and breezy. All of which makes the album's decidedly sinister touches that much more effective. "Never Saw The Point" starts out cute enough, with Follin singing, "I never saw the point in trying / 'cause I would only let you down". But then she sings, in that exact same tone, "And I just couldn't bring you down there with me / I just can't stand to see you drown". All of a sudden, the song's lilting arrangement takes on another dimension, suggesting recurrent anxiety instead of buoyancy.

This contrast between light and dark was found on the band's very first single, "Go Outside", which opened with the notorious cult leader Jim Jones intoning, "To me, death is not a fearful thing. It's living that's treacherous." In its earlier incarnation, the quote felt a bit like an extraneous addition for the sake of giving the band an "edge" that befitted their name, but in context, it feels appropriate. Because while it's a stretch to say that Cults are exploring the relationship between life and death with their music, the delicate push-and-pull between heartbreak and humor is a constant presence here. When they revert to the latter mode, as Follin does when singing, "I could never be myself, so fuck you," the result is winning. But then we have "You Know What I Mean", a deceptively cheerful ditty filled with uncertainty: "Help me 'cause I'm feeling shaky / tell me what's wrong with my brain, 'cause I seem to have lost it." The sentiment is intensified by Follin's deliberately sweet tone, which could just as
easily be interpreted as being eerily clear-eyed. There are brief moments in Cults where a more nuanced approach to vocals would be much appreciated (and the superb, Belle and Sebastian-esque "Bumper" hints at how galvanizing such a development would be), but for the most part, the singularity that Follin communicates is immediate and convincing.

It's largely due to this urgency that Cults is such a breathless and exhilarating album, and such a fun one - for all its darker hues, this is music that slams a smile onto your face. Listening to it, I'm reminded of Sleigh Bells' superb Treats, not because Cults is a particularly close sonic relative of that Brooklyn boy-girl duo's decibel-busting pop; rather, both bands establish their aesthetic clearly, work within its narrow boundaries, and spin aural bliss out of it. Sure, it's a bit homogeneous, but when the songs are this good and exciting, that's hardly a major drawback. Besides, if Cults can't win you over with their music, they'll win you over with sheer force. As they exhort themselves, "rave on". Who am I to disobey?

Avalanche City - Our New Life Above The Ground [2010/MP3/V0/WEB] HoTT

Google it!

The album is now available and is free to download. The reason it is free; so you'll feel good about sharing it with others, so please give it away to all your friends.

Brie Larson - Black Sheep (Scott Pilgrim Soundtrack) [2011/Re-Edit/Single/MP3] HoTT

In Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the film, Metric is the inspiration for the film's fictional band, the Clash at Demonhead, and contributed the song "Black Sheep" to the film. The clothing of Metric's lead singer, Emily Haines, is also the basis for the clothing of the lead singer of Clash at Demonhead.[34] Brie Larson provides the vocals for "Black Sheep" in the film, while the soundtrack features a version of the song with Haines as lead singer. Brie's version is much better, here it is:

TOKiMONSTA with Gavin Turek - Creature Dreams [2011/EP/WEB/MP3/320] HoTT

Boomkat.com wrote:

"Diverse and revelatory new EP from girl like TOKiMONSTA, with a teeming, organic production style that's really blowing our minds right now. The smoked-out 'Fallen Arches' could almost be some lost 70s astral jazz-funk oddyssey, with its conga-heavy groove and bluesy piano chords. The two jams featuring Gavin Turek, 'Little Pleasures' and 'Darkest (Dim)', are out-and-out trip-pop - TOKi's sublimely love-stung vocals coated in a lovely Balearic shimmer - and if this was the 90s they'd already have been licensed to a million chill-out compilations (we mean that as a compliment). 'Bright Shadows' heads for computer-diced 2-step territory, but the unusually rootsy, psychedelic vibe that characterises this whole EP remains very much in place. Of the seven tracks, 'Moving Forward' is probably our fave, being a heavily dubbed arrangement of tumbling tribal drums, cinematic synth-strings and helicoptering 16-bit arpeggios. Really impressive, forward-thinking stuff throughout, and for us one of the best things Brainfeeder have ever released. Recommended."

Tyler, The Creator - Goblin [Deluxe Edition] [2011/CD/MP3/320] HoTT

“Goblin” is spiteful, internal, confident, vitriolic, vividly bruised stuff, a shocking — and shockingly good — album that bears little resemblance to contemporary hip-hop. It has more in common with the stark, thick-with-feelings independent rap of the mid-to-late-1990s and also the improbably rich-sounding minimalism of the Neptunes in the early 2000s. For every caustic rhyme about violence there’s a pensive, unexpectedly gentle production choice to go with it. Unlike the maximalism of hip-hop radio, you can feel the air in these songs, the gasping for breath.

The National - Exile Vilify [2011] [Single] [V0 WEBRip]

Original song written for Portal 2.

"The video game ‘Portal 2′ has just been released and with it has come the release of a brand new song from The National recorded specifically for the game, in what is a very odd pairing indeed. The track is entitled Exile Vilify. It is predictably beautiful, and it would be interesting to see how it was used in the game. Even as just as standalone track though, this is a truly stunning tune. Those piano interludes are just great, and even though I’ve only listened to it a couple of times, it’s probably safe to say it’s one of the better songs I’ve heard so far this year."

- Release Notes ------------------------------------------------------------- -

"It would be safe to say there are some bands that truly do not sit still
when it comes to shaping their sound. Thursday is one of those bands. After
penning a post-hardcore masterpiece in Full Collapse and breaking into the
mainstream with War All The Time, Geoff Rickly and company revamped
themselves into a less abrasive, more melodic and certainly more experimental
band with A City By The Light Divided. Their ongoing quest for a constantly
changing musical identity has again and again brought listeners to new
realms, and Thursday’s newest opus No Devolución is no exception. A beautiful
display of a band’s ability to evolve while creating a surreal environment
from start to finish, No Devolución proves to be the most moving album
Thursday has penned since they gave us Full Collapse nearly ten years ago.
What sets No Devolución apart from the records they’ve released since Full
Collapse is the success Thursday is able to achieve in creating a memorable
atmosphere musically. The bombastic opening of “Fast to the End” is quickly
subsided by driving drums and lush, dense melodies. Rickly’s gentle vocals
mix well given their production to a slightly raspy output as well, giving
this album a very memorable beginning. From the first track, producer Dave
Fridmann does an amazing job melding the sounds this band cranks out
regardless of the mood – a sure sign of the comfort level built between the
band and Fridmann over the now three albums they’ve recorded together. The
experimenting with lush melodies continues in “No Answers” as a droning hum
pushes things along while Rickly again takes center stage. “A Darker Forest”
brings a darker timbre to the table, with eerie guitars and a snare-driven
drum beat building the tension at the introduction. When it resolves to the
chorus, the melodies stay dark while the drums and vocals go to another
level. What is strange about the delving into darker melodies on this record
is that after listening to Thursday’s split with Envy, none of this seems
like it was ever out of reach for these guys.
“Past and Future Ruins”, a track featured recently on a split with Underoath,
features spurts of abrasion and melody between sections of driving toms and
moving keys. It also shows us one of the few hints of unclean vocals on the
record in the culmination of the chorus as the fuzzy, grizzly vocals help
push the chorus over the edge. “Magnets Caught in a Metal Heart” is more in
the vein of indie-rock, channeling crisp, yet delicate guitar melodies and
echoed vocals to create a rather surreal sound that embraces the atmosphere
it creates. Thursday even channels a somewhat industrial feel in “A Gun in
the First Act” by their use of grimy programming on top of the off-kilter
drumming from Tucker Rule. The one true sidewinder comes in the form of
“Millimeter”, which harkens sounds of Flock of Seagulls more than anything
else. It takes some time to get used to (what part of this record really
doesn’t?), but you could argue they own the song nonetheless. It all seems
effortless regardless of the path they take, as Thursday proves to be a
master at creating moving atmospheric backdrops for their melodies and
vocals. If you were looking for a return to the past given the band’s touring
on Full Collapse or even a rehashing of Common Existence, you will be in for
quite a shock when your ears hear what No Devolución has to offer.
On their sixth time recording a full length, Thursday has never seemed so
sure of what they were creating as they sound on No Devolución. It seems time
has only made this band more focused and realized, and the tracks here prove
once again that Thursday will not sit still regardless of what anyone has to
say about them."
