Album: Hours and Hours: a Tribute to Seaweed [2008] [Compilation]

A good friend of mine asked me to grab this and up it. I hope ya'll enjoy!

To those who don't know, Seaweed was an influential post-hardcore band in the 90's who helped define a new movement in punk. Now by post-hardcore, I mean the orignal post-hardcore, which were bands that came out after 80's hardcore. Bands like Fugazi, Jawbreaker, Samiam, and other similar artists. A brand of emotional, catchy punk with melodic breaks and a new approach to an old idea. This tribute album is just that, a very good tribute to the band and their sound. There were only a few bands I had ever heard of on this album, but all the bands did a real good job contributing to the album in their own unique way.

The best part of this tribute album is that half of the bands did real good versions of Seaweed songs that were very close to the originals, but some bands performed their own take on the songs, which was a pleasant surprise. Some tribute or cover albums are just purely carbon-copies of the songs. Those albums can be ok, but usually it's worth it to just listen to the originals. This tribute album had such variety within itself that it shows the true extent of the influence of Seaweed and shows that not just punk kids can get these songs. That speaks not to just the bands who are on this album, but Seaweed as well, and that is the real purpose of a tribute album, to show others how much this band meant to you in hopes they can experience them in a similar way.

Overall, this was a refreshing release and it was a very good tribute to a very good band. It should serve the purpose of enlightening a new generation of music fans to Seaweed's music and influence on the scene. It's always good to step back and look at some of the bands that helped define the genre of music today that we all love. Seaweed was one of those bands that came around and did things their own way, no matter what people said. The musical version of a cult classic basically, Seaweed is proudly and properly represented in this tribute. This is a great buy for anyone who likes Seaweed and a great buy for anyone who enjoys good music in general.
