Pendulum are a drum and bass group originally hailing from Perth, Australia. In 2003, they relocated to the United Kingdom. The group comprises Rob Swire, Gareth McGrillen, Perry ap Gwynedd, Ben Mount (MC Verse), Paul Harding, and Paul Kodish (live drums).

The Pendulum sound is typically heavy beats accompanied by low, buzzing basslines, overlaid with synthesized leads. The group has produced various remixes of other artists, the most well-known being their remix of "Voodoo People" by The Prodigy. Pendulum have also remixed themselves. In 2006, 'Painkiller' with the Freestylers was remixed by NOISIA and released on Against the Grain records.
The Perth group (2002) is comprised of Rob Swire (vocals/synth/producer), Gareth McGrillen (bass guitar/producer/DJ), Perry ap Gwynedd (guitar), Paul ‘El Hornet’ Harding (DJ) and Kodish (drums).

In 2005 they released their debut album, Hold Your Colour. Critically, the album was well-received in both the United Kingdom and Australia. In addition, it was one of the biggest selling Drum and Bass releases of all time. Pendulum have also collaborated with Freestylers, releasing the single “Fasten Your Seatbeltâ€. MC Spyda and tenor fly also feature as vocalists on “Tarantulaâ€.

Their track “Vault†was played by almost every DJ and was declared by annual Knowledge Drum’n’bass Awards as The Best Track of the Year. They’ve made a bunch of remixes, including a remix of Voodoo People by The Prodigy.

Since then, Pendulum turned to Rock music. Having impressed on their sold-out UK tour at the end of last year, Pendulum return to these shores in May with their full live band experience. The tour coincides with the release of their second album “In Silico†on May 12th. “In Silico†is Pendulum’s first album for Warner Bros. Records via the bands Ear Storm imprint and features the recent single “Graniteâ€. A second single entitled “Propane Nightmares†will further preview the album when it’s released on April 14th.

God Is an Astronaut are an instrumental three piece hailing from the Glen of the Downs, Co. Wicklow, Ireland. They formed in 2002 and released their debut album The End of the Beginning the same year on their own Revive Records label. All Is Violent, All Is Bright (2005) is the band’s second album. The album features their build ups from serene ambience to searing intensity and is a closer representation of their live sound. The single Fragile from the album has also received plays on MTV2 UK’s 120 minute show and MTV’s “The Comedown” show.

God Is an Astronaut released an EP called A Moment Of Stillness in 2006.

Rusko has made a name for himself in the dubstep world by introducing a focus on mid-range wobble over sub-bass tremor. Like all genres, dance music moves in phases. The sound of the moment is dubstep, a brutal British movement led by faceless blokes with names like Caspa and The Bug, and characterized by wobbling basslines that hum like a moving lightsaber. It’s a menacing sound, an oscillating drone that pounds you into submission.

The U.K. beatsmith Rusko is a titan of the genre, having broken through with the 2008 single “Cockney Thug,” which piled syncopated drums atop that furious drone, punctuating the whole thing with shrill whistles that might as well have been criss-crossing bottle rockets. At one point the whole song stopped, and a British-accented voice blurted out “I ’avent got a clue what’s going on.”

Released on Diplo’s Mad Decent label, Rusko’s new album is even more disorienting—in a good way. Refusing to bend to its own genre’s conventions, it plays like a mash-up of every major dance movement of the last 30-plus years. “Feels So Real” warps a disco beat. “Kumon Kumon” is a straight-up jungle track. “Rubadub Shakedown” chatters like reggae, then downshifts into a funk groove. “Got Da Groove” dabbles in hip-hop, with vocals from ubiquitous Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane. “Do U Wanna Have A Party” delivers a crushing bass drop and a quacking duck.

Rusko is big on unexpected sound effects; he also implements laser guns and shattering glass and the telltale squawk of a connecting fax machine. But the glue that binds the album is that signature dubstep beat, which takes on a surprising number of forms and conjures an unexpected array of emotions. It can underpin a diva, as it does for Dirty Projectors’ Amber Coffman on “Hold On.” But it can also do what it does late in the album on “You’re On My Mind Baby”—pulse way down in the mix, a low thrum holding steady like an idling engine, ready at any moment to crank up.

Ratatat is a collaboration between lead guitarist Mike Stroud and bedroom producer Evan Mast, with piercing sheets of guitar and synthesizer yoked to a bass-heavy metronomic grid. The project marks a new direction for both musicians: Evan Mast's 2001 debut as E*vax, Parking Lot Music, was a stroll through a collection of debris both sleek and gritty, while Mike was known for ripping it up on stage with Ben Kweller and Dashboard Confessional. With Ratatat, however, the pair establishes a plush, crisp sonic space, and then holds court there for a good three quarters of an hour.

Theirs is an imperial presence, somewhere near the crossroads of rock, electronic and hip-hop. Though their songs are pop-length, and each is bound to get stuck in your head, these are not actually songs in the conventional sense. There are no vocals, for one thing, and they grow from point A to point B without looking back over their shoulder for a chorus. While the album is a home studio creation, most of the material begs to strut on stage for a hungry crowd. Indeed, what we have here is a long-awaited stepchild of IDM and hair metal sensibilities, joined by the omnivorous appetite of hip-hop.

And Ratatat is hip-hop. For starters, "Lapland" and "Breaking Away" feature the sort of spacious, head-nodding beats that fuel freestyle fantasies, and recently led the duo to a mixtape collaboration with Wu-Tang's Buddha Monk. The two waifish Crown Heights boys also sprinkle their album with samples of local rap veteran Young Churf, who starts out the album with a sly boast: "I've been rapping for about 17 years, okay? I don't write my stuff anymore. I just take it from my head..."

So it begins. The opener, "17 Years", is heavy artillery singed with the roar and crackle of distorted power chords. But it has a change of heart halfway through, wandering from the guitar-rock battlefield to graze on bittersweet, twilit pastures. "El Pico" cultivates a brighter kind of melancholy. Layered with scraping percussion, sweet electric piano figures, wiry synthesizers, and even an old accordion, it sets a tone that somehow manages to be intimate and epic at the same time.

Ratatat is also good old-fashioned rock. "Desert Eagle" has a sing-songy quality that explains why so many people have been trying to put words to these tunes since Mast and Stroud started performing together as Cherry last year. But if "Desert Eagle" promises an indie rock ballad, it soon turns into a towering arena-rock anthem that delivers a healthy dose of Brian May. There is, after all, more than a little Queen in Ratatat's sound, which, when paired with Evan's husky, meticulous beats, results in a surprisingly buoyant thrash that delivers on the promise of early rock/rap crossovers.

The duo's debut tends towards harmonic saturation, folding over you with great swaths of guitar and synthesizer. Unsurprisingly, the effect is intensely pleasurable, giving the album a warm and almost amniotic sense of immediacy. But a womb can also be a prison. Despite the risk of claustrophobia, Ratatat keep the oxygen flowing with well-proportioned chord cycles backed by spare, expansive beats. In soaring like a motet yet pounding like cavalry-- or, in modern terms, in ripping like Jimi but bumping like Dre-- Ratatat deliver on the ancient promise that harmony and rhythm, often set against each other in the history of Western music, are really just facets of one another.
